Brooks Plumbing was founded in 1926 by Albert Brooks to serve as a residential plumbing company. At that time, a major source of income was derived from the conversion of outhouses to indoor plumbing. Albert's son, Leonard Brooks, assisted his father through his college years, but received his journeyman's license from Kessler Plumbing. In 1954, he received his master plumber's license and returned to take over the management of Brooks Plumbing. The original shop was located in the basement at 739 Leland Avenue, an apartment building which Leonard owned and where he resided. Leonard was a graduate of Washington University where he received a BA degree in business management. Leonard continued to expand the operation into sewer repair replacement, water repair replacement and general remodeling. In 1972, the business was incorporated as A. Brooks Co., Inc.
